Splendor Game Box Customization

As many board gamers know, manufactures opt for overly-large boxes to “house” their products. They likely do this to achieve two things:

  1. Shelf presence – A big, shiny, colorful box will promote their product better than a small, shiny, colorful box.
  2. Value (mis-)representation – they assume that consumers can base a product’s value on the size of the box, and thus charge more for the product.

One of the great offenders of this is the game Splendor. As soon as it was release, gamers complained about lack of space being used in the box.

Sure, this size of box to size of game misrepresentation likely helped with the manufactures marketing, but it does very little for my to ease the game library footprint.

I wanted to fix that. I sometimes make new boxes for games using foamcore board, but this time I thought that a 3D printed solution would work better. I did some searching on Thingivers.com to find a solution. I found a few ideas. But I ended up doing a my own design using some of the models located on thingiverse for inspiration.

It turned out pretty nice, and successfully solved the “box-bloat” issue.
