My girlfriend and I have recently dusted off Summoner Wars, an older game by PlaidHat Games.
This is a really solid 2 player skirmish game. It pits two summoners against one another to slug it out across a gridded play area. It plays like a miniatures game crossed with chess.
There are tons of different armies to choose from to fit any play style. There is also the possibility to deck/army build.
It plays in about 30-45 minutes and is really easy to teach/learn, but it has a good amount of depth for strategy gamers.
Yes, there is some dice rolling involved, and you can lose some fights with awful rolls. But there is enough to mitigate the luck in general.
Really fun. I highly recommend it.
