Chipotle Hot Salsa Copycat Recipe

You can hate on Chipotle all you want, but I love their red (hot) salsa. I was able to track down a clone recipe that gets pretty close, but I modified it. And I think that it is just as good if not better than the original.

Ready? Here we go.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tomatillos (quartered)
  • 20 – 30 Arbol peppers (dried) – I use 30 but you could use less
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1tsp salt
  • 2tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1.5c water
  • (cilantro – handful more or less if desired)

Directions

  • Remove stems from peppers.
  • Remove about half the seeds from peppers. (more or less depending on spiciness)
  • Put the peppers, tomatillos, garlic cloves, salt, cumin, pepper, and water in a sauce pan.
  • Bring ingredients to a simmer over medium-high heat.
  • Cover and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Uncover and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Stir regularly.
  • Pour everything into a blender or food processor.
  • Blend.
  • (Add cilantro if desired – and blend again)
  • Ready to eat immediately OR let meld in fridge for a few hours
